Wesley Methodist Church

The Wesley Methodist Church building was constructed in 1911-1912 with the English-style at the cost of $18,500, excluding the $1000 for fittings. It was dedicated by Bishop W.P. Eveland as the name of the FitzGerald Memorial Church on 26 November 1912, after the late Bishop James M. FitzGerald and his daughter Cornelia FitzGerald. In order to acquire that piece of land, which the church bought for $8,000, the church had to swap plots in Jalan Anson and Jalan Burma for the lot in Jalan Larut.

It was the oldest Methodist Church in Malaysia. Back to June 1891, when English Evening Services were conducted at the then newly built Town Hall by Rev. D.D. Moore. In November of the same year, English services moved to the Armenian Church (no longer extant). In 1893, the English services moved again, to the Priory, at the Runnymede Hotel at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The first Sunday School was held in 1891 and the first Christian Chinese wedding in 1898. The FitzGerald Memorial Church building was finally paid up in full in 1927.  During 1931, the church was renamed as Wesley Church Penang.

The church is located at Burma Road between Jalan Larut & Jalan Clove Hall. The Sheraton Penang and Giant Supermart is just across the road.
