Western Road Cemetery

Western Road Cemetery is the biggest Christian cemetery in Penang. It is the final resting place for both Protestants and Catholics but more importantly, it is also the resting place for a number of British soldiers who died here and never went home. The cemetery has been in use since the late 19th century, when the Protestant Cemetery at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah was closed to further burials.

This cemetery is beautiful and very peaceful. Some of the old tombstones where the old soldiers are buried date back more than 100 years. There is a large section of war graves, and even a section for police personnel who died in the line of duty.

Actually the Western Road Cemetery is becoming a tourist attraction in it's own right. There is a famous grave with a marble tombstone of a great big dog sleeping on top of his master's tomb. Apparently the dog was so faithful that it stuck to the master until it died of hunger and a marble statue was carved out in it's remembrance.
